Alligators are unique animals. They are thought to have changed very little since prehistoric times and are actually more closely related to dinosaurs and birds than any other reptile that roams the Earth today. We've all seen signs that say, “don't feed the Alligators” and there is good reason for this. Alligators who get accustomed to human food will lose their natural fear of humans and even become attracted to people. Alligators that have been fed may be more likely to attack, and are more likely to become nuisance animals. But its not enough to just not feed the alligators. You also need to be careful of food scraps that you leave behind. If you're fishing at a popular bank, don't throw old fish parts in the water. You could attract alligators that may then become regular visitors. If you're camping near where alligators live, don't leave food out after you're finished eating. It's like an open invitation to your campsite. Your courteous clean-up will help protect yourself and this ancient species.
